Ben Wheatley ‘couldn’t give a f***’ about cinema walkouts for his film High-Rise EXCLUSIVE

Last year the controversial movie hit cinema screens and completely split the critics.

Some reviews called it “thrilling” but “batsh** crazy”, while others slammed it for being “pointless and pretentious.”

Based on J G Ballard’s novel of the same name, High-Rise is set in an alternate 1970s and follows Hiddleston’s neurologist – who moves into a tower block that represents the British class system.

Following news of walk-outs in cinemas and at its world premiere, director Wheatley had some strong words on the matter when Express.co.uk caught up with him at the last night.

The filmmaker bluntly responded: “Well, I couldn’t give a f***.”

Wheatley was then asked if that was all he had to say on the matter, and replied: “Absolutely.”

Walkouts aside, the filmmaker attended the Empire Awards because High-Rise was nominated for Best British Film, but the gong went to I, Daniel Blake in the end.

Nevertheless The Greasy Strangler, which he was executive producer for, won Best Comedy.

Wheatley previously opened up about walkouts to Variety last year, revealing it could be bruising.

He said: “There’s walkouts, but what kind of an idiot walks out of a film? I don’t think I’ve ever walked out of a movie.

“I’ve always made the movies for me and that sounds arrogant, but I understand there’s an audience that’s like me and I play to that audience.

My gamble is that it’s big enough to support the film.”

On the world premiere walkouts he added: “It can be bruising on the day, but it’s fine.

“I get worried that one day you’ll make a film nobody will go and see. But at least people are passionate about it.”

Ben Wheatley’s latest film, Free Fire, is released on March 31, 2017.
