BBC weather forecast: Cold FREEZE threat as temperatures plummet over Easter weekend

Carol Kirkwood told BBC Breakfast viewers that today would be breezy, with some outbreaks of rain and frost.

“This morning for many of us it’s a cold start, it’s a frosty one and a dry one, there’s even some sunshine around,” she said.

“But as we head through the day the cloud is going to build and it is going to turn more showery. In between the showers, of course, there’ll be some sunshine.”

Easter weekend is going to be wet at times and rather cold, with the potential for snow on northern hills in Scotland.

For this time of the year, the temperatures are incredibly disappointing with the coldest conditions in the north of the country.

Widespread frost is expected in the far north east of Scotland and the south west of England and Wales this morning.

Rain will move towards the north of Wales and into the Midlands, the south east of England and East Anglia by the afternoon.

Meanwhile, there could be one or two outbreaks of rain in Northern Ireland and northern England, although it should be dry.

The cool weather is likely to remain in the north east of Scotland, but the south west of Scotland should be milder.

Overnight, the wet weather in the south of the country will continue to work its way northwards, but this will raise the temperature in some parts of the UK.

As a result, Good Friday won’t be as cold as today, although, rain will batter the far south west by the end of the night.

An area of low pressure is to blame for the poor weather conditions as these weather systems are being pushed northwards.

On Friday there will be some grey clouds in Scotland and Northern Ireland, meanwhile, in northern England, there could be a few showers, but not much wet weather.

The wetter weather is going to be in the south west, before it moves on to Wales, the Midlands and the south east of England.

However, there could be some sunshine across southern counties, although the brightest weather will be in western areas.

Over the Easter weekend, it should be drier across Wales, the Midlands and southern England, but there could still be some thick clouds.

A bit more snow will fall along the mountains of Scotland. Temperatures in northern Scotland are unlikely to reach above six degrees.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
