BBC weather: Ferocious snow to unleash 'BITTERLY' cold conditions as temperatures plummet

Meteorologist Nick Miller issued a warning to BBC Breakfast viewers as temperatures are set to drop below freezing next week.

But before the cold weather hits parts of the country, there will be an increase in sunshine, Nick said: “Before it turns bitterly cold this weekend there will be increasing sunshine.

“But that cold wind that is already felt out there will become more of an issue through the weekend. Next week, it will be bitterly cold and there will be some snow.”

With high pressure in the north east the flow of air is set to travel from the east to the UK.

The wind will drag with it a bit of cloud from the north sea towards parts of the England.

Temperature wise, Britain is looking at freezing conditions, particularly in rural Oxfordshire where it is minus seven celsius.

Meanwhile, there will be one or two showers near north sea coastal counties and a bit of cloud towards Northern Ireland and western Scotland.

The coldest weather will be in Birmingham, Norwich, London, Cardiff and Aberdeen, while the warmest conditions are in Plymouth, Belfast, Newcastle and Glasgow.

Nick said: “Most areas will be dry and could see some sunny spells. The temperatures are around four to six degrees.

“Now, into tonight some areas of cold around but lengthy clear spells. It will be dry overnight and its all about the temperature dropping away.

“So another wide spread frost taking hold, still perhaps Northern Ireland holding just above freezing.”

On Saturday there will be an increase in the amount of sunshine, however, there is some patchy cloud expected in Northern Ireland and the far south of England.

It is expected to be warmer on Sunday but when the strengthening wind is factored in it is going to feel like it is below freezing.

Throughout next week temperatures will drop below freezing across the UK as the ‘beast from the east’ sweeps Britain.

“It is bitterly cold next week” Nick said. “And there will be snow at times, in fact, the met office has issued some weather warnings for eastern parts of UK.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
