BBC UK weather forecast: 70MPH GUSTS to ravage Britain as ARTIC breeze approaches

A neighbouring cold front, residing close to the far north of Scotland, is going to unleash strong winds and wet weather this week.

The heaviest downpours on Monday will be in Orkney and Shetland in Scotland, but some showers may filter down to the northern Highlands.

However, much of Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and Wales is going to be dry and sunny for the start of the day.

Meteorologist Carol Kirkwood told BBC Breakfast viewers: “We do have a wet and windy day ahead, particularly across the far north of Scotland.”

She continued: “We do have a weather front and tightly packed isobars across the far north of Scotland that’s what’s producing the rain and all this cloud, and also the strong winds.”

Today, the average wind speed should remain in the teens, however, the northern and western half of Scotland will be hit with much stronger gusts.

In those areas gusts could reach a staggering 70MPH and it is also going to be quite blustery on that side of the country.

Temperatures in northern and western regions of Scotland are perhaps only likely to reach a high of 11 Celsius.

Elsewhere, the heat value is not much higher as most of the UK will see figures range between 11 and 14 degrees.

This evening much of England, Wales and Northern Ireland will stay dry, although more persistent rain is going to extend its way southwards across Scotland.

In addition, the winds will start to strengthen in northern England and Northern Ireland, where a bit more cloud will develop tomorrow.

Overnight and into Tuesday temperatures are set to drop to a low of five Celsius, despite an area of high pressure drawing close to the UK.

As a result, forecasters expect the start of Tuesday to be quite windy, especially in Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.

Outbreaks of rain will be persistent in the northern and western part of Scotland, whereas the south and east should be mainly dry.

Southern, central and eastern England is where the sunshine will be at its best on Tuesday afternoon.

Figures are likely to reach 16 Celsius in southern, central and eastern England, where it will be just a few degrees higher than eastern Scotland.

With some parts of the UK feeling a lot cooler this week, bookmaker Coral has cut odds on snowfall in the UK this October.

The firm make it 1-2 for snow to fall before the month is out and have evens at 2-1 for this Halloween to be the coldest on record.

“The odds are suggesting we will get snowfall before this month is out as temperatures are set to plummet at the back end of October,” said Coral’s John Hill.

“We have been taking bets on this Halloween being the coldest ever in the UK where the odds are falling all over the time following the threat of snow.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
