BBC Breakfast: Sally Nugent forced to apologise over awkward Judy Murray introduction

But as she began her interview with Judy, the reporter found herself apologising over her introduction.

Starting her report, Sally said: “We’re in Wimbledon this morning where of course if you’ve seen our headlines you’ll see that we’re leading our story with Andy Murray will not be playing any part in this Wimbledon.

“I’m going to get the camera to just move slightly to my right.”

Judy could be seen as Sally exclaimed: “Andy’s mum.”

However, the sports reporter quickly apologised for introducing Judy as the sportsman’s mother.

“I bet you can’t stand being introduced like that,” Sally noted.

“I’m so sorry. Morning to you Judy Murray.”

Judy smiled as she replied: “Good morning Sally.”

“You’ve got several other hats on here and we will get to Andy in just a second but you’re here to talk about how important the next two weeks are for women’s sport,” Sally commented.

Judy discussed the importance of women in sport before addressing her son’s decision to pull out of the competition.

“What was it that made him decide that this was too much?” probed Sally.

Judy responded: “I think when he decided to test himself out in a match was at Queens, where he had three sets and then he played at Eastbourne and had a couple of matches at Eastbourne.

“Playing best of three sets is very different to playing best of five sets and of course, you wouldn’t want to put yourself in a position where you couldn’t complete the match or you won your first match but weren’t able to complete your second match.”

Sally went on to ask what advice Judy had given her son.

The former Strictly Come Dancing star dished: “Feet up and play with the kids and watch the football.”

“Who is he supporting?” Sally asked.

Judy answered: “I’m not sure who he is supporting

“We do have a family sweep stake and I’ve drawn Japan.”
