This morning’s BBC Breakfast show was hosted by John Kay and sports presenter Sally Nugent, and the pair were joined in the studio by former Shadow Home Secretary Andy Burnham.
Speaking out about the current issues commuters are facing with Northern and Thameslinks trains, the Greater Manchester mayor explained that the situation was “certainly not” getting any better.
During the interview, John asked Andy if he should take some responsibility for the situation as a board member.
Andy replied: “Absolutely, and I will and I am stepping forward saying ‘let’s have a plan’,” but John interjected and spoke over him.
“You’re blaming the government, you’re blaming everybody else, some people would say you have to take some of the responsibility yourself,” John argued, whilst Andy was silenced waiting for the host to finish what he had to say.
Viewers were frustrated and took to Twitter to criticise John and Sally’s presenting.
One said: “Why are them pair having a go at Andy Burnham? #bbcbreakfast.”
“#bbcbreakfast all they do is speak over guests. Poor presenters with bad manners,” another remarked.
A third tweeted: “Fairly obvious that @sallynugent doesn’t use trains much (probably not at all) they way she is sneering at @AndyBurnhamGM on #bbcbreakfast.”
“Horrible presenting on #bbcbreakfast today,” said a fourth.
The mayor was on the BBC show to speak about the huge cancellation and delays of Northern and Thameslinks trains and why he thinks there needs to be change for commuters.
He said: “Northern commuters are invisible and [he’s] got to speak up for people up in the North of England”
And added it’s: “Another day of misery for commuters and it’s been going on for weeks and it’s just so frustrating, I can’t tell you.
“I’ve been shouting about this, pleading for somebody to get grip, it’s just not good enough.
“People paying hundreds of pounds for their season tickets and their not getting a service.
“I am going to demand action from the government,” Andy remarked.
Burnham previously claimed train cancellations have doubled recently with 1,000 suspended services.
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6.00am on BBC One.
