The host was chatting to the actor and his co-star Adam Sandler about their new film The Meyerowitz Stories when the 80-year-old decided he would not answer anymore questions.
Things had already become slightly awkward before the interview came to a close as Charlie said: “I hope you don’t mind me asking, you’ve just turned 80…”
“Go ahead Charlie, take your best shot,” Dustin hit back.
A nervous Charlie continued: “All I was going to ask was, you’re going to just keep going, you’re not slowing down are you?”
Slightly stunned by the question, the star replied: “I don’t understand why that does happen because it’s one thing to go through life having a job but it’s another thing for we lucky few who don’t call it our job.
“It’s our work and I don’t know how you stop doing what is in a sense your work.”
Dustin went on to quip: “If you were going to ask something about sexual differences now that I’m 80 I could spend more time with you on that,” as he hinted he would not answer any more questions.
Charlie appeared red-faced and nervously laughing as he noted: “I’ll tell you what, breakfast television has never heard the like…”
“That’s it perfect, have a good day and enjoy your cereal,” Adam chipped in as they ended the interview.
Back in the studio, Louise Minchin and Dan Walker could not stop laughing at the awkward moment, with the former commenting: “I can’t believe it, knowing Charlie as we do, that he didn’t ask another question. For once Charlie was…”
“Maybe he did but it never made the final edit,” Dan said in defence of his co-host.
BBC Breakfast airs on BBC One at 6am.
