Bad night sleep? These are the reasons Brits aren't getting enough shut-eye

Trying to fit in with a partner’s sleeping habits means a quarter of us say we even have to go to bed earlier than they would like to help avoid conflict later.

The new study of 2,000 adults, by home furnishing retailer IKEA, revealed 45 per cent of us endure sleepless nights to allow our partners to be comfortable.

Some 55 per cent of us say we cannot get comfortable, with four in ten being either too hot or cold (39 per cent) and 21 per cent being kept awake by loud snoring.

In addition, one in ten said they were woken because the covers were stolen (10 per cent).

To try to accommodate our partner, we make a number of compromises.

A quarter of us will try to take up as little room as possible in bed to give our other half more space (23 per cent).

Meanwhile, 17 per cent say they will remain too hot or cold if their partner is happy with the temperature.

The study found women were the most likely to give in and find somewhere else to sleep if they cannot get comfortable (52 per cent).

Despite our best efforts, the poll found Britons are still missing out on an average of one hour of shut eye every night.

To tackle the problem, IKEA is now launching its TOG-ether bundle – which is inspired by Swedish sleeping traditions, with two single duvets replacing a double.

The home furniture retailer will be selling two different duvets of different tog ratings, in one bundle – allowing couples to get a discount for purchasing as a pair while still suiting their own sleeping habits.

The firm, which has more than 20 stores across the UK, said the new duvet could offer couples separate levels of warmth, with different TOG ratings for each duvet.

The inspiration behind the new duvet came from Sweden, where couples regularly use ‘double/single duvets’ in a bid to get a good night’s sleep.

It means buying two separate single duvets, but sold at a lower price and in one bundle.

The two duvets in the one pack offer differing thicknesses to cater for those partners who differing degrees of heat.

Couples will be able to choose either a 7.5 TOG or 12 TOG for their side of the aptly-named ‘TOG-ether duvet’, which is being rolled out across IKEA stores on January 27 and January 28.

Bosses at the chain decided to launch the new £40 duvet – in their RODTOPPA bedding range – after research found that half of all Brits regular lose sleep because of their partners.

The two single duvet bundle will be sold for less than the usual price of two singles (£40 rather than £50).

IKEA’s textiles head Carol McSeveney said: “Many of us find that not getting a good night’s sleep is a regular occurrence.

“Getting enough sleep is of utmost importance to remain healthy and optimise our wellbeing.

“This is why we have introduced this traditional Swedish sleep trend of using two single duvets instead of a double, in UK stores for a short period, allowing couples to select a duvet from the bundle that suits them.”
