In a bizarre move – as the long, long wait for a first look at Avengers 4 continues – Kevin Feige’s studio has instead promised a full trailer for Captain Marvel, which hits cinemas in March. This vaguely – but not quite – aligns with a previous rumour suggesting an Avengers 4 trailer would come on Monday, followed by Captain Marvel on Wednesday. Were the two films just the wrong way around?
Whether Marvel will put out a trailer on Wednesday still remains to be seen, but we now know that the Monday slot was for Captain Marvel – not the Spring-due ensemble blockbuster.
The Marvel Studios account posted: “Check out the new poster and tune-in to @ESPN’s Monday Night Football to see the brand new trailer for Marvel Studios’ #CaptainMarvel.”
Indeed, the Monday Night Football coverage was exactly when the Avengers 4 trailer was previously alleged to be landing.
But still, a Captain Marvel trailer is still hugely exciting – not least because the teaser, released in September, was criticised for not showing enough of Brie Larson’s titular hero.
The new poster puts her very definitively front-and-centre, with the blue and red colour scheme popping along with a mixture of Earth and outer space settings.
Alongside Larson, actors Samuel L Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashanna Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Being, Clark Gregg and Jude Law are billed along the top.
Avengers 4 will also star Larson and focus will now be on whether the trailer lands on Wednesday – along with the movie’s official name.
Unsurprisingly, there’s no word yet from Marvel on whether or not this is the case.
It’s been a long wait for footage from the film: anticipation has hit feverish heights over recent days, with several alleged drop-dates coming and going.
Now that the anniversary of the Infinity War trailer’s release has been and gone, fans are more on edge than ever.
Whatever happens, Marvel probably don’t need to worry about box office performance: Infinity War was a mutli-billion-dollar grossing record-breaker, and its sequel will likely be one of the biggest films in Hollywood history.
Even if we do have to wait a little longer for any details whatsoever.
Captain Marvel is out on March 8. In the UK, Avengers 4 is currently slated for April 26.
