Ava DuVernay and Issa Rae Jump Onboard (at Least, on Social Media) the Rihanna/Lupita Nyong’o Movie Idea

A lot of the movies put out by Hollywood puts out these days seem to have had wholly nonverbal pitches: an image of a superhero, or a poster of the movie on which it’ll be based, or a toy, or a still of an app about goddamn tempestuous fowl. So a film wrought by a casual Twitter conversation wouldn’t seem all that out of the question — it seems far less half-baked than half the nonsense out there. In the case of a recent viral Twitter exchange, it’d also just be, well, fucking awesome.

After being prompted by some Great Mentioners on Black Twitter, Insecure creator/writer/star Issa Rae and director Ava DuVernay recently voiced their (likely jocular…but hopefully not?) desire to jump onboard the for-now-nonexistent Lupita Nyong’o-Rihanna movie that’s been germinating in the realm of fantasy on social media.

As Indiewire notes, it all began with a photo of Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o sitting together:

The photo sparked a vivid description by Twitter user “k,” whose brief but clearly potent post eventually racked up 90,000+ retweets:

Nyong’o was the first person to bring this image into the realm of cinematic potential, writing:

To which Rihanna responded:

Writer/editor Mikelle Street tagged Ava DuVernay, suggesting it was her turn to step in as the fantasy director of the film. She responded:

Then, Twitter user Darell. tagged Issa Rae, bringing her into to the list of collaborators with one tweet; she responded with this very symbolic cat:

There can’t be much left to do before this thing gets released, right?

Let’s block ads! (Why?)
