Apple Tree Yard author Louise Doughty 'penning sequel' to BBC hit

The powerful drama, starring Emily Watson in the lead role, has prompted a strong response from viewers because of its shocking rape scenes.

However, after gaining an audience of over six million each episode, the BBC is keen to plan a sequel.

A source told The Sun: “Apple Tree Yard has proven to be a real hit, despite the early outrage over all the sex and the brutal rape scene in the opening episode.”

BBC chiefs are also particularly keen to do a follow-up to the debut series, given the popularity of the show and the conversation it’s generated,” the insider added.

They concluded by teasing what could come from a follow-up, hinting: “Louise has never steered clear of controversial or difficult topics so it’s sure the sequel will be just as powerful and harrowing as the first.”

The author has already hinted to her followers on Twitter that she has plans for a follow-up book.

When asked if a sequel would be possible, Louise tweeted: “Sort of… and all very hush-hush (no-one’s listening, are they?)”

When another suggested that Louise should write a follow-up, the author teased: “Funny you should say that…”

The book has been just as successful as the show, having risen as high as second place in some book charts.

It is unknown exactly what will be the focus of the sequel, but Louise has hinted that the book could explore the death of Yvonne’s rapist, George Selway (Steven Elder).

The last episode aired last night and saw Yvonne’s lover sent to prison for manslaughter.

In a shocking twist, it was revealed to the audience that it was, in fact, the scientist who asked Mark (Ben Chaplin) to kill her rapist.
