Ant is believed to have failed a breathalyser test after smashing his car into a BMW and a Mini containing a couple and a three-year-old child.
On Good Morning Britain today, Piers Morgan said he would like to see the 42-year-old off-screen for a “long time” following the news he is returning to rehab.
Speaking earlier this morning, he said: “He’s definitely changed, no question.”
He went on to address Ant’s split from his wife Lisa Armstrong, noting: “Lisa does my make-up on Life Stories, she’s a delightful person.
“I never would have thought that he would do that [get divorced] for example, let alone this.
“This Ant McPartlin is not the guy I know. His life is faltering and tormented for some reason.”
Piers, 52, then shared his thoughts on what Ant should do next in terms of his career.
“I’d like to see him off TV for a long time as he came back too soon [after his first stint in rehab],” he shared.
“I feel for Dec [Donnelly], by default, his career reaches the buffer as they’re a double act.”
It comes after a spokesperson for ITV confirmed that Saturday Night Takeaway is cancelled this weekend.
They said: “ITV has taken a joint decision with Ant and Dec’s team not to broadcast Saturday Night Takeaway this weekend.
“We will be reviewing options for the last two episodes of the series (March 31 and April 7) which would not feature Ant who is taking time off to seek treatment. We very much hope that he gets the help that he needs.”
Piers continued: “If you’re Dec what do you do?” Piers continued. “Do you agree to do it on your own? Do you do it with someone else?
“It’s an incredibly difficult moment for him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t do it.
“In the television world this is an earthquake.”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
