After 35 years the Swedish pop sensation are back with two new songs. The announcement was made in a statement back in April, but fans still aren’t quite sure what to expect.
Luckily Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus shed some light on their new music at the Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! premiere in London last night.
According to NME, Bjorn said: “One of them is a pop tune, very danceable.
“The other is more timeless, more reflective, that is all I will say. It is Nordic sad, but happy at the same time.”
He added: “I think that exuberant quality of the two ladies [Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad] together singing, that makes the saddest song a bit uplifting.
“I think that is what happens and that [it] is very organic: [it] isn’t calculated, [it] just happened that way.”
But when it came to the idea of a new album, Benny was quick to shoot down rumours.
He said: “Doing another album is like doing Mamma Mia 3.”
Benny added: “What is the point unless there is a good reason, good script, good environment?
“It is such a joyful experience, so that is a reason to do it.”
When ABBA announced they would produce two brand new songs, the statement revealed why after all this time.
It read: “The decision to go ahead with the exciting ABBA avatar tour project had an unexpected consequence.”
ABBA added: ““We all four felt that, after some 35 years, it could be fun to join forces again and go into the recording studio. So we did.”
“And it was like time had stood still and that we had only been away on a short holiday. An extremely joyous experience.
“It resulted in two new songs and one of them, I Still Have Faith In You will be performed by or digital selves in a TV special produced by NBC and the BBC aimed for broadcasting in December.
“We may have been old, but the song is new. And it feels good.”
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! is released in UK cinemas on July 20, 2019.
