Movies don’t get much cheerier and chirpier than Thor Ragnarok, whether they are Marvel or otherwise.
The end credits scene, however, struck a note of foreboding than many fans immediately picked up on. As Thor and Loki celebrate their escape from the destruction of Asgard aboard the Grandmaster’s stolen ship, another, even larger ships looms into view.
Something bad is about to happen, and now we know that it is even worse than we thought.
In fact, it spoils every giddy feeling of triumph, happiness and new hope from the ending of the movie…
Eagle-eyed fans recognised the new ship and realised it signalled the arrival of its master, Thanos.
The leaked Infinity War footage from the D23 Expo had shown Thor crashing thorugh space and colliding with the Guardians of the Galaxy’s ship. Now we know how he got there.
Even worse, it seems he got off lightly, unlike those left behind, who were shown in a devastating shot from the new trailer.
It’s a powerful moment but runs the risk of completely rendering the entire plot of Thor Ragnatrok pointless.
AVENGERS INFINITY WAR TRAILER: IS VISION THE FIRST CONFIRMED DEATH REVEALED?
The interior of Thor and Loki’s ship is shown strewn with the dead bodies of the Asgardians who thought they had escaped Hela’s destruction of Asgard to build a new home on Earth.
Some of Thor’s gladiator allies from Sakaar are also among the fallen. It seems that their death-defying escape and triumph was all for absolutely nothing.
A booted footed steps through them, assumed to be Thanos’ child Ebony Maw (a member of his Black Guard in the comics, but upgraded to offspring in the MCU).
It’s unclear whether Thanos himself is present but Loki is seen desperately offering up the Tesseract.
Initially many had seen this as another sign of his duplicitous nature. More generous souls are now convinced that he does it to buy time for Thor or any remaining Asgardians and gladiators to somehow escape.
Either way, Thanos is later seen with the Space Stone in his Infinity Gauntlet.
Thor is shown wrestling with some huge door or portal, which may also be part of the escape attempt which will leave him blasted into space.
Was everything in Thor Ragnarok for nothing? Are Asgard and its people truly gone forever?
