Star Wars 8 'Kylo Ren and Rey will SWAP masters' – Trailer pulls HUGE bait and switch

Are Disney and Lucasfilm really going to pull the greatest bait and switch in cinema history?

The final Last Jedi trailer just landed and left fans with even more questions, as expected. However, for the first time many are not simply wondering about what clues can be discovered but are actually convinced that much of the trailer is deliberately misleading fans.

There are three separate occasions in the trailer that appear to show one scene that might actually be two scenes spliced together. There is also one major death implied that must actually be a huge misdirection. Are the filmmakers trying to hide a huge shock double betrayal that will leave Episode 8 on a massive cliffhanger?

WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS

In fact, Disney may even have given us a blatant hint in the trailer when Luke says: “This is not going to go the way you think.”

He might as well be talking to the audience.

From the very opening moments of the trailer the filmmakers could be playing pesky Jedi mindtricks. When each character speaks, not once do we see them in the same shot as whoever they are addressing. Every line leads the audience to assume who it is with cleverly inserted shots of other characters.

Star Wars 8: Will Rey and Kylo Ren swap masters between Luke and Snoke

Snoke opens with: “When I found you, I saw raw, untamed power… and beyond that, something truly special.”

The audience is meant to assume he is talking to his student, Kylo Ren. Yet at the end of the trailer we see the First Order leader torturing Rey.

Later Snoke says: “I’ve been expecting you…” Has he been talking to Rey all along?

When he cries: “Fulfill your destiny!” it increasingly seems like it was Rey he wanted, not Kylo. The words also then take on a chilling echo of the Emperor’s exhortation to Luke to kill his father and take his place.

Nor should fans assume that Rey would never be tempted. Daisy Ridley has constantly warned that Rey will be increasingly disappointed by Luke.

In the trailer Rey says: “I felt something… it awakened, but now I need to know how to wield it.”

This sounds distinctly menacing and links back to her temptation to access the Dark Side during her duel with Kylo on Starkiller Base.

Rey adds: “I need someone to show me my place in all of this.”

Yet Luke has been shown to be increasingly opposed to traditional training, as well as being traumatised by his experiences losing his former school, temple and students.

Luke Skywalker says: “I’ve seen this raw strength only once before. It didn’t scare me enough then. It does now.”

Is he talking to Rey about the loss of Kylo to the Dark Side or about Darth vader and refusing to help her? Is this what drives her to Snoke?

Imagine the shock if Rey actually asks Snoke to become he teacher at the end of the movie.

Is Luke talking to Kylo at the burning temple and referring back to Darth Vader?

Kylo is shown holding out his hand and the trailer cuts to a shot of Rey. Many fans are sure these are two different scenes.

It could be an earlier scene from the Forceback vision of the burning temple where he is demanding Luke hand him some important artefact like the Skywalker lightsaber. Or what if he is holding out his hand to Luke for help?

Similarly, the trailer goes to great lengths to make it seem like Kylo Ren is about to blow his mother Leia’s ship out of the sky. Since Leia was fully locked in for Episode 9 before Carrie Fisher’s untimely death, this is highly unlikely.

Kylo Ren is expected to have a showdown with Luke on Ahch-To. Imagine the shock if Luke defeats him or he surrenders and then begs for a chance to find his way back to the Light?
