The 52-year-old presenter demanded to know from the SNP leader about targets she set for the NHS, along with how many she had actually achieved.
Sturgeon, 47, jumped on the defensive, telling the GMB team: “We set eight difficult targets. I think one is being delivered right now.”
It wasn’t enough for Morgan, who snapped back: “With respect, you set eight targets and you’ve hit one of them?
“You’ve failed on seven of them!” the outspoken host insisted.
However, Sturgeon had an explanation, telling Morgan that they had “toughened the targets”, adding that they were taking decisions that no one else across the United Kingdom was taking.
Morgan was confused though, and asked: “Here’s the problem. Yes, you’re in power but that was badly eroded, but why set targets when you won’t hit them?”
Sturgeon was resolved in her answer, telling Morgan she believes the Scottish National Party should be judged against their targets, whether they hit them or not.
She also reflected on her loss of seats back in the General Election earlier this year, telling Morgan and co-host Susanna Reid that she “regrets” the 21 of seats that she lost.
“All I’m trying to do is put it in some context,” Sturgeon defended. “The 2015 election was an aftermath of the referendum – it was unlikely that was ever going to be repeated.
“I struggle to say it’s anything other than a very strong position,” she continued, referencing the fact that they still have 35 MPs in parliament.
