A rare 50p coin is selling for up to £800 on eBay. The coins represent quite some value to collectors, who are keen to add to their stock.
This 50p, created in 2010, was minted for a special reason – to honour a British institution.
The coins, of which 7,410,090 were created, celebrate Girl Guiding.
In fact, the piece was created for the centenary of the charitable organisation. It features a design with six clovers in a circular design around a smaller clover – which is the sign of the Girl Guides.
An inscription on the same face of the coin reads: “Celebrating one hundred years of girl guiding UK.”
The design was created by a pair, Jonathan Evans and Donna Hainan.
The Girl Guides is now a worldwide institution, with huge numbers in countries all over the globe.
In the UK alone there were 554,939 Girl Guides at the most recent count. In the US there are a whopping 3,169,371. India boasts 1,780,545 Girl Guides.
One eBay seller, rdk302007, has the coin listed for £800.
The seller writes: “One of few rare celebratory 50 pence pieces celebrating one hundred years of girlguiding.
“A real collectors coin, which is gaining more and more popularity amongst collectors. As shown, girlguiding crest on the front. Free postage.”
Another seller, gretania26, has the coin listed for £250, with £5 post and packaging, and state that the coin is in good condition.
This coin was described only as being “in good condition”.
Collectors may also be keen to get their hands on another rare coin, a Beatrix Potter coin.
The rare Mrs Tiggy-Winkle Beatrix Potter coin minted in 2016 is very popular on eBay, and is selling for hundreds on the website.
The 50p coin, with an image of the iconic hedgehog character on the front, is selling for far more than it’s over-the-counter value.
