Princess Diana’s ‘Wicked’ Stepmother aims to uncover the volatile relationship between the late Royal and her stepmother Raine Spencer.
The pair were known for their early clashes, before reconciling later in life.
Channel 4 will feature new interviews from friends and insiders along with fresh insights into Diana’s early years.
With the help of Raine’s larger-than-life mother and romantic novelist Barbara Cartland, she rose from relatively humble origins to become a Countess three times over and a member of the Royal family.
A former Debutante of the Year, Raine became a politician at the age of 23 and campaigned successfully to save many London landmarks from destruction.
She then became stepmother to the future Princess of Wales and proved a divisive figure within the family.
The hour-long documentary will tell how Raine was doted on by Diana’s father Johnnie Spencer, but was apparently loathed by the Princess and her siblings.
Raine attracted controversy by making sweeping changes to Althorp, the Spencers’ ancestral home and allowing the sale of family assets.
As Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles fell apart, she formed a stronger relationship with Raine and forged an unlikely alliance with her so-called “wicked stepmother”.
Raine passed away last year aged 87 on October 21, 2016 following a short battle with an illness.
Princess Diana‘s ‘Wicked’ Stepmother airs this Thursday on Channel 4 at 9pm.
