London Fire: Susanna Reid DEMANDS answers from John Healey 'Labour and YOU were warned'

Both the Conservatives and Labour have been scrutinised for neglecting recommendations put forward by various coroner’s reports following similar blazes in London and Southampton, which could have saved dozens of lives yesterday.

Since the Grenfell Tower in west London became encased in a raging inferno, flammable cladding has been blamed for the rapid spread of flames, while it’s emerged families were told to stay in their flats and the building wasn’t fitted with a sprinkler system.

Healey revealed Tories rejected recommendations to ensure sprinkler systems were fitted into similar blocks and insisted there were “serious questions for ministers to answer right now”.

Though, Susanna Reid’s co-host Ben Shephard chipped in: “What we do know, though, is that Labour in 1999 were warned about the risk of cladding; that it could act as a chimney to spread fire.”

Healey stressed: “The use of cladding isn’t necessarily unsafe, there could have been a problem with the materials or the fitting.”

Shephard sighed: “We’ve been contacted by families in Southampton who have told us that they live in high rise buildings and they’re afraid because they don’t have a sprinkler system.”

Reid fumed: “I’d imagine people are thinking, ‘I don’t care how much it costs put the sprinklers in.’

“And it mustn’t take any time – how long do people need to hear sprinklers will be in place? You can demand immediate action is taking place.”

“We’re demanding now,” claimed Healey, explaining that parliamentary powers are limited until after the Queen’s speech has been delivered.

“Can Parliament not meet in exceptional circumstances?” Reid snapped.

Healey assured: “That’s what we’ve asked.”

However, Healey’s response divided Good Morning Britain viewers with many accusing the Labour MP of training to “gain political points” over his Tory rivals.

“Political point scoring at this point is distasteful there should be cross party talks and no blaming just action,” hissed one audience member, while another agreed: “Appalling, insensitive & uncomfortable viewing political point scoring regarding the #Grenfelltower fire by John Healey on @GMB.”

Yesterday, GMB came under fire for its “insensitive” coverage of the devastating inferno on Latimer Road, which has so far left 12 people dead, dozens are still unaccounted for with a further 34 in hospital.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
