Daliso Chaponda has now surged ahead of his nearest rivals as frontrunner to bag tonight’s £250,000 after shocking Britain’s Got Talent judge Simon Cowell with his joke about slavery.
The Malawi-born comic had audiences both in shock and stitches when he quipped: “I’m black, 200 years ago this would have been an auction! We’ve come a long way, that’s all I’m saying!”
The punchline prompted a humungous gasp and applause from the live studio audience, while Simon was seen mouthing: “Wow!”
“I love that you are fantastically non-PC,” the show’s head-honcho beamed.
And it seems bookmakers agree as they’ve slashed the 37-year-old’s odds to just 9/4; easily making him tonight’s one to beat in a surprising last minute U-turn.
Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: “It’s safe to say punters will be laughing all the way to the bank if Daliso wins BGT this year.”
Pianist Tokio Myers is tipped at 5/2 for victory, with former leaders of the pack the Missing People Choir left to settle for third place at 5/1.
Magician Issy Simpson and The Pensionaries find themselves trailing with odds of 8/1, while Sarah Ikumunu, who was eliminated and brought back as the judges’ wild card follows at 12/1.
At the bottom of the pile is Ant and Dec’s golden buzzer Matt Edwards with dismal odds of 66/1 following a lukewarm reception with his routine in the semi-finals.
Britain’s Got Talent concludes tonight at 7.30pm on ITV.
