The new Overwatch Uprising event is now live on PS4, XBox One and PC, and in many ways is something new for the game.
Instead of going down the route of providing a seasonal event that pulls from the calendar, the studio have decided to pursue something far more exciting.
Blizzard have chosen to expand the game’s own lore and focus on an event that was recently fleshed out in the latest digital comic.
NEWS: OVERWATCH PATCH NOTES REVEALED:
“We’ve heard the call that a lot of players want a non-real-world-tied event, meaning they want some sort of set event in the Overwatch world,” Kaplan told PCGamesN.
“The event is going to be something – when players see the event and play the event, I think they’ll see that we’ve been listening to their feedback,” he continued.
“We’ve been hearing a lot of desire for more story, people want to know more about the story of Overwatch, they want to know more about the past of Overwatch.
“I think they want to know more about what’s going on between omnics and humans in this world and how did we get there. I think a lot of that will be answered for them.”
And Blizzard have now confirmed that they plan to supply even more game lore through their social media channels, during the Overwatch Uprising event.
“We’re also decrypting more of Overwatch’s history over on our social media channels, so be sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for additional intel,” a new statement reads.
“And as always, don’t forget to keep an eye on playoverwatch.com to stay up to date with the latest game news.”
The first part of this new content comes in the shape of an Origins Video, usually reserved for new heroes being deployed.
It functions as more of a teaser for the new Uprising co-op brawl, which bears a lot of resemblance to the Junkenstein’s Revenge Halloween event.
“Journey seven years into the past and join a group of Overwatch agents fighting through the streets of King’s Row to quell an uprising led by Null Sector, a rogue group of omnics.
“Team up with your friends and play as Tracer, Torbjörn, Reinhardt, or Mercy to defeat the robots and liberate the city. There are no reinforcements. Failure is not an option. The future depends on you.”
Game Director kaplan has also confirmed that unlike with other past brawls, players can either decide to play Uprising with the intended characters, or the second version with whoever they desire.
The new Overwatch Uprising event is live now on PS4, XBox One and PC until May 1.
