The hardened Walford character (played by Linda Henry) couldn’t handle hearing the news that Sylvie Carter (Linda Marlowe) had died.
Due to be released by the end of the week, Shirley’s outburst may ultimately turn her short stay into a longer term prison sentence.
Shirley lay silently in her bunkbed with tears slowly streaming down her cheeks after Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White) visited to tell her the sad news.
Picking up on the news, her cellmate probed about the news and launched a tirade of insults about mothers who were not around for their children.
As Shirley snapped, one viewer tweeted: “She’s had that coming well done Shirley #Eastenders #prison #mad #bbc1.”
“I loved #Eastenders tonight, Shirley beating up her cellmate!!#Eastenders,” posted another, as a third suggested: “Lock Michelle up. Sling her in with Shirley #EastEnders.”
A fourth posted: “We need Shirley’s bants back on the square, but seeing her go all ball buster was great TV. #EastEnders
Referring to her Bad Girls character Yvonne Atkins, fans couldn’t help but see the resemblance.
One viewer tweeted: “Shirley in jail reminds me off when she played Yvonne in bad girls #Eastenders.”
“#EastEnders … Shirley’s gonna be running that wing by the end of the week yah know,” posted another.
A third joked: “Shirley is morphing into Yvonne Atkins I am half expecting Fenner to show up by the end of the week #Eastenders.”
EastEnders continues this Thursday on BBC One at 7:30pm.
