Churchill movie trailer: Brian Cox roars as our WW2 Prime Minister in new D-Day thriller

There have been many Winston Churchill incarnations over the years, with John Lithgow’s version in The Crown being the latest.

While the World War II Prime Minister will feature in , he’ll also be played by Gary Oldman later this year.

However its Brian Cox’s turn now, in a brand new period drama set in the run up to the June 1944 D-Day landings – a decisive turning point in the fight against the Nazis.

Joining the lead is Miranda Richardson as his wife Clementine, Mad Men star John Slattery portraying Eisenhower and James Purefoy playing King George VI.

The synopsis reads: “As allied forces stand on the south coast of Britain, poised to invade Nazi-occupied Europe, they await Churchill’s decision on whether the invasion will actually move ahead.

“Fearful of repeating his mistakes from World War I on the beaches of Gallipoli, exhausted by years of war, plagued by depression and obsessed with fulfilling historical greatness, Churchill is also faced with constant criticism from his political opponents; General Eisenhower and Field Marshal Montgomery.

“Only the unflinching support of Churchill’s brilliant, unflappable wife Clementine can halt the Prime Minister’s physical and mental collapse and help lead him to greatness.”

Churchill is directed by Jonathan Teplitzky (The Railway Man) and was written by British historian and author Alex von Tunzelmann.

Meanwhile Oldman’s incarnation in Darkest Hour, which will come out near the end of the year, is set just after Churchill becomes Prime Minister in 1940 and sees him wrestle with making a peace treaty with Hitler.

Churchill is released in UK cinemas on June 16, 2017.
