The 76-year-old actor has been playing Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise for the last 17 years, which is just as long as Hugh Jackman.
With the Wolverine star bowing out in Logan, fans had been wondering if Sir Patrick would be too.
He confirmed the fact after being in tears with Jackman at the Logan premiere, but has also confusingly said he would like to be in a Deadpool sequel.
In our exclusive interview with Sir Patrick at the Empire Awards, Express.co.uk asked for some much needed clarification.
*WARNING LOGAN SPOILERS*
The actor, who won the Empire Legend award, confirmed that he hasn’t changed his mind about being done with the role – but with a twist.
“Oh no I’m not changing my mind, they’re two completely different projects. [Logan and Deadpool].
Baring in mind that Logan sees Xavier die in 2029 and Deadpool is set in the present, we asked if he meant they are different because it would be a prequel.
He replied: “Yes, yes. They’re different projects.”
“The Charles Xavier story is over and it could not have ended better than it does in Logan.
“And given that Hugh, who I met on the set the day that he came to do a film test for the role, has been in my life for 17 years.
“And if he is ready to take a bow then I felt I am too.”
However did Sir Patrick mean he would play another character in a Deadpool sequel?
Saying that the Charles Xavier story is over, would certainly seem like it, but he could have been referring to the character’s ending being secured in Logan – thus leaving space open for a return in films set before it.
But if he does play another character in a Deadpool sequel, who exactly would he play and would it be too confusing for X-Men fans? We’ll have to wait and see.
