On Tuesday, it was reported that 400,000 criminal records have disappeared from the police national computer following a technical issue. As this falls under the Home Office’s jurisdiction, Piers Morgan quizzed Priti Patel on whether she would step down from her cabinet position with the UK Government if the problem is not resolved.
Mr Morgan said: “400,000 crime records have disappeared from the police national computer on your watch.
“Can you give us some assurance because we know that in at least one instance a DNA profile from a suspect in custody did not generate a match to a crime scene as expected?
“This has potentially impeded the investigation into the individual’s involvement in the crime.
“Some serious criminals are going to get away with it because of the incompetence of this process.”

He continued: “Just to clarify you do know where they are?
Ms Patel replied: “They are on the systems.”
The GMB host asked: “Which system, which ones?”
The Home Secretary said: “I have already said I cannot tell you the name of those particular systems.”
Mr Morgan responded: “So you are saying as a fact as Home Secretary that these 400,000 crime records which we have all assumed have disappeared, you know with 100 percent certainty that they exist elsewhere and therefore there is nothing to worry about?”

The Home Secretary said: “We are working night and day to bring these records back.”
Mr Morgan responded: “That was not my question, my question was if you do not find them will you resign?”
Ms Patel said: “I have already told you Piers we are working night and day.”
The GMB host asked for a final time: “I know but if you don’t find them will you resign?”
The Conservative MP concluded: “It is my imperative that we secure this data.”
