Big Bang Theory plot hole: Major Sheldon game console blunder exposed

Before Leonard (Johnny Galecki) began his iconic romance with new neighbour Penny (Kaley Cuoco), the astrophysicist was frequently found hooking up with Sheldon’s nemesis, Leslie Winkle (Sarah Gilbert).

When the pair start dating again in season two, Sheldon is frequently left by the wayside and throws petty fits in response to his roommate’s newfound love life.

In the second episode of the second season, The Codpiece Topology, Sheldon is exiled to the staircase to play Mario by himself to make way for Leslie and Leonard’s date.

Sadly, the evening doesn’t go to plan when Leslie storms out after one of their several disagreements over scientific theories.

Their epic office romance finally comes to an end after Leonard sides with Sheldon during an argument about String theory vs. Loop Quantum Gravity.

During one of the geekiest moments of the series’ early seasons, Sheldon uses a Nintendo 64 emulator and a massive extension cable to play Mario on the staircase.

However, while the classic Big Bang Theory moment solidified Sheldon as one of TV’s primary geeky characters, fans were quick to point out a glaring Nintendo mistake at the beginning of the episode.

Sheldon’s mother was kind enough to send Sheldon’s old Nintendo console along with three controllers and a memory card, assuming Leonard would be there to revisit some classic games.

Although memory cards were a frequent accessory for older consoles, it varied whether game data was actually saved onto the separate storage card or onto the game cartridge itself.

The Nintendo 64 console was the first of Nintendo’s gaming systems to use a memory card, called a Controller Pak in this instance, but the developer’s technology was frequently ahead of the curve when it came to its most advanced games.

Super Mario 64 not only introduced 3D to the iconic platforming series, but was also notable for saving player data directly onto the cartridge.

This wasn’t the first time Sheldon got his game console knowledge mixed up, as fans spotted a similar mistake in The Indecision Amalgamation when he is forced to choose between the Xbox One and the Playstation 4.

Fans were quick to point out that the gang wouldn’t be able to hold Halo night every Wednesday if Sheldon bought the new Playstation, as the Halo franchise is only available on Xbox.

Although the series claimed to be the geekiest show on television before its conclusion last year, The Big Bang Theory couldn’t escape the observant eyes of its most critical fans.

Thankfully, the prequel series Young Sheldon is set during the iconic character’s childhood in the late 80s so there are fewer opportunities for the spin-off to fall victim to similar console errors.

The Big Bang Theory is available to stream on Netflix.
