The Crown: Imelda Staunton to take over from Olivia Colman as the Queen

The 63-year-old will take the role for seasons five and six of the critically-acclaimed show, according to reports. Season three of the blockbuster only began on Sunday but it would appear producers are already looking to the future.

Staunton, who starred as evil Dolores Umbridge in two Harry Potter films, was nominated for an Oscar for her lead role in the 2004 drama Vera Drake.

She will be at the heart of a number of royal crises during the Queen’s “annus horribilis” of 1992, which saw Prince Charles split from Diana, Prince Andrew separate from the Duchess of York, Princess Anne get divorced and a blaze ravage part of Windsor Castle.

Further episodes will include the deaths of Princess Diana, Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother.

Claire Foy first took the role of the Queen alongside Matt Smith as the Duke of Edinburgh when the series began in 2016.

The series has now seen Tobias Menzies take on the role of Prince Philip and Helena Bonham Carter take over as Princess Margaret.

Netflix dismissed reports that Staunton will portray the Queen as “pure speculation” yesterday. It said it was filming the fourth series and had yet to commission future instalments.
