Friends: Star reveals the storyline that was never supposed to happen

Friends fans will remember Ross’ girlfriend that came at the worst possible time in his life.

Mona (Bonnie Somerville) and Ross Geller (David Schwimmer) began their relationship just as Ross found out he was the father of Rachel Green’s (Jennifer Aniston) baby.

Friends fans will remember that Mona first appeared in Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) and Monica Geller’s (Courteney Cox) wedding episode titled The One After I Do.

Ross spent most of the episode trying to impress her at the wedding reception by teaching the little girls on his table to dance, leaving him with no time to dance with Mona.

She later became Ross’ girlfriend, but broke up with him after Rachel moved in with Ross for the baby.

However, it seemed she was getting too intense for Ross anyway after she tried to get the pair to do a couple’s holiday card together.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the star revealed she was only meant to appear in the Wedding episode, but her chemistry with David Schwimmer lead to her being invited back on set.

On landing the role, Bonnie revealed: “My agent said, ‘They’re casting episode 1 and there’s a small role that has maybe a couple of lines’,”

“I went in and [series creators] Marta [Kaufman] and David [Crane] were in the room, and it was over in a second. Then my agent called and said, ‘You got in, you’re going in to work on Monday’.”

The actress went on to reveal it was her “funny” ad-lib that lead to her making another appearance.

Bonnie continued: “I think back now like, who do I think I was?” she added.

“But we had a really good banter and somebody said, ‘You’re really funny, we should have you back’. I was like, yeah right.”

However, showrunners didn’t back out on their promise as the star soon featured in episode 5, titled The One with Rachel’s Date when Rachel spotted the pair in Central Perk together.

She was originally booked for three more episodes, but show runners allowed the relationship to grow, right up until Mona walked out of the relationship seven episodes later.

She added: “”Our relationship just kind of kept going, and eventually I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to be the seventh friend. I’m going to be a regular!'” Bonnie remembered. “That didn’t happen.”

Despite the role being short, the star revealed it did help her get noticed.

The Bonnie star said she was warned by Joey star Matt LeBlanc that she would be recognised after just one appearance.

“I said, ‘No one’s going to care,” she said.

“But then the morning after that first episode, someone came up to me at the grocery store and said, ‘Are you that girl who was on Friends last night?’ I got work right away after that.”

Friends is available on Netflix.
