He’s worn an eye-patch for the last ten years, but suddenly fans are seeing a whole new and much younger, Fury. Not only is he a lot less, well, furious, he also has two perfectly working eyes. It’s almost as much of a shock as the particularly impressive CGI effects which have flawlessly transformed the 70-year-old Samuel L Jackson into a much younger man. Unfortunately, the future SHIELD leader’s 20/20 vision suffers a fatal blow by the end of the movie – and the way they do it is just purrrfect.
Warning: Spoilers from here
Fury is one of the toughest, most hard-bitten and ruthless characters in the Marvel universe.
This movie, though, shows a much softer and sweeter side to him, most notably in his interactions with the cute and cuddly stray cat Goose.
Of course, fans already know that the ginger moggy is not what he seems and earlier reports are confirmed in the movie. Goose is actually something far more terrifying.
The Skrull leader Talos spots what Goose is straight away and is horrified. Even after learning that the cat is actually a terrifying killer and an alien called a Flerken, Fury remains besotted with his furry friend.
In one of the final scenes Goose scratches Fury’s face and when he brushes off the scratch, Talos looks far more worried. His fears are confirmed by the end of the movie.
Fury, of course, doesn’t waste the perfect opportunity to let his dramatic disfigurement start building the myth of the fearsome leader in a particularly hilarious scene.
CAPTAIN MARVEL REVIEW: THE BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT IS HOW PREDICTABLE THIS MOVIE IS
When Coulson tells him rumours are already spreading that he lost his eye demonstrating incredible heroism in a spectacular battle, Fury does not deny that’s what happened.
He also rejects the tray of glass eyes and starts to embrace the eyepatch. The man, the myth, the marvel is born.
