Rare coins: Collectable coin now selling for £13,000 – do you have one of these pieces?

A rare coin has skyrocketed in value to the sum of £13,000 experts have revealed.

The two collectible coins are £50 sovereign pieces, which are both sold out.

Hattons of London has seen incredible interest and estimate the coins are now worth £13,000.

A 22 carat gold £50 sovereign featuring a Lancaster bomber on one side and a full colour union flag was released in March as part of the Defence of the Skies collection to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the RAF.

Only 19 of the coins were struck, in honour the number of Lancaster bombers, and all sold out within a week.

The second £50 coin – also a 22 carat gold 5oz coin – was released to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation sapphire jubilee last month.

Just 26 of the coins were struck, representing the age of the Queen when she was crowned.

Incredibly, they sold out within just three days of release.

Demand has been so high for the coins that Hattons of London has even offered to buy back the Lancaster £50 sovereigns at a premium to anyone willing to sell them back.

Hattons of London MD, Simon Mellinger said: “It’s clear that coin collecting is as popular as ever in the UK, from people trying to find a rare Peter Rabbit 50p in their change to the more serious collector who wants to own one of our £50 sovereigns.

“The collections we release tend to capture the mood of the nation, whether it’s a great Royal occasion or a special national anniversary, and we’re incredibly proud of them.

“It’s great to see that numismatists – or coin collectors – also appreciate them too.”

If you bought one of these pieces it may well be worth offering them up to collectors to make a profit.

Another coin has been selling on eBay for £6,000.

The rare £1 coin appears to be a bog-standard new £1 coin, but on closer inspection the coin was actually minted in 2016.

The coin was listed on eBay by seller “naonaom.xhhvq8f”, who is based in Westerham and boasts 100 per cent positive feedback.

A rare 50p coin has been listed for £540 on the auction site.

The listing description says the coin is “very rare” and in “amazing condition”.

It reads: “This coin is a very rare 50p as you’ll not find a circulated tom kitten coin anywhere.

“This coin is in amazing condition considering it’s been circulated, you’d be missing out to let this coin go.“
