Waitrose customers notice error on its 'British' lamb hotpot packaging – can YOU spot it?

Confused shoppers have taken to Twitter after noticing that the supermarket giant’s “British” lamb hotpot has actually been made with “New Zealand lamb”.

One customer tweeted: “@waitrose just saw your British shepherds pie. Made with New Zealand lamb? So what makes it British?”

Another shared a picture of the hotpot ready meal in a Waitress store, and commented: “Not often that Waitrose has a bad hair day (aka a ‘Trump Moment): this product is legal but just downright silly!”

Waitrose explained to one customer: “British is the name of the range of meals denoting the origin of the recipe.”

But someone responded: “No, @waitrose, the wording clearly suggests the LAMB is British, and then tells us the lamb is from New Zealand. Very misleading.”

Waitrose is now set to rename its “British” meals containing lamb as “Classic”.

A spokesperson has said in a statement: “To ensure the provenance of the lamb in the meals is clearer (it has always been on back of pack) we have [already] stickers all packs on the front.

“We are about to re-launch the range with the branding ‘Classic’, removing the large ‘British’ reference from the front of pack.

“This was only ever supposed to denote the origin of the recipe but we understand why confusion has arisen.”

But for some customers, this isn’t enough.

One person on Twitter exclaimed: “No – DON’T rebrand it ‘Classic’ – use BRITISH LAMB!”

Someone else added: “Yes please use British lamb! It’s so unethical to use anything else.”
