Depeche Mode to play Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom for the first time in more than 30 years

The Basildon electronic kings are the headliners in a marathon three-day bash, whose line-up includes Goldfrapp, Belle & Sebastian, Future Islands and The Jesus and Mary Chain.

Glasgow had to queue behind Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol to land the fourth public beano which was announced yesterday by Lauren Laverne, broadcasting her Radio 6 music show live from Glasgow School of Art.

But it was worth the wait with 56 acts performing over three days at five city centre venues from Friday March 24 to Sunday March 26.

After making the announcement, Laverne said the event would be a kind of personal homecoming because her Scottish father Les, who is from Dingwall, first influenced her to get interested in music.

She commented: “I have spent so much time in Glasgow so I am excited to be back.

“I hung out here as a teenager with my friends who were a part of the music scene in the 90s.

“I think it absolutely is the best place to be this year. You couldn’t get a more vibrant music scene than here.

“Having grown up listening to music that came out off this city before I even arrived at records, I feel I am very connected to my family roots by coming back here.”

The weekend of music will by day feature talks and interviews and film screenings featuring Father John Misty, Edwin Collins and Jon Lydon.

The evening portion will feature the live gigs with favourites like The Shins, Sparks, Bonobo, The Lemon Twigs and Cate Le Bon.

Sunday night at Barrowlands will climax with Depeche Mode, whose appearance coincides with the release of their 14th album Spirit, which will be released next month.

The music festival was established by Radio 6 to feature live gigs by artists who “share the alternative spirit of the network.”

It has attracted crowds of over 10,000 people in what is regarded as a mecca for music lovers.

Tickets for all the events go on sale at 10am on Friday.
