Rare 50p coins such as the Beatrix Potter collection can sell for huge sums online.
This collection of four 50p coins with a face value of only £2 has sold for £1,170.
The purchase saw eBay user atiash-g9p9xp make 584 times what the coins are actually worth.
The coin collection, which was sold yesterday for the whopping sum caused a bidding war and 36 bids were made on the item.
Writing of the set, the seller said: “Highly Collectable Beatrix Potter full set of four 2016 colour silver proof 50ps.
“All with original Royal Mint boxes and certification. Postage is special delivery. Peter, Jemima, Squirrel and Mrs Tiggywinkle. This lot is being resisted due to non payment by the buyer at the previous auction.” (sic)
Silver mint, these special commemorative coins were sold by Royal Mint to celebrate the British author.
They feature Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-duck, Squirrel Nutkin and Mrs Tiggywinkle, which is one of the rarest 50p coins in circulation.
