The two BFFs, also known to millions of adoring fans as Rod Stewart and Elton John, have bickered and bantered across five decades in the spotlight.
Their bond is legendary, so it was a shock when Rod opened fire on his fellow star live on TV last night.
The Scottish entertainer was appearing alongside Cyndi Lauper on chat show Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen and didn’t mince his words when a female caller asked what he thought of Elton’s planned retirement from touring.
Rod said: “I did email her and said, ‘What, again dear?’ And I didn’t hear anything back.
“Talking about retirement, I’ve never spoken about retirement, and if I do retire, I won’t make an announcement. I’ll just fade away. I don’t think this big deal (Puts on a silly voice), ‘I’m going to retire.’ It stinks of selling tickets.”
When Cyndi joined in, Rod delivered the ultimate showbiz insult to his fellow Brit legend.
Cyndi added: “That’s not a bad idea. We could say, ‘For the last time, we’re retiring.’ Then one more time, ‘Well, maybe the second to last time’’.
The audience laughed but Rod threw one last jab at his old friend: “It’s dishonest. It’s not rock and roll.”
He was more sympathetic about Elton’s recent tantrum after a fan ran on stage during his Las Vegas show and grabbed him.
Rod said: “I don’t mind it. I love people coming up on stage. It’s a laugh. But I can see why he was p***ed off with it. I’ve had people come on stage while I was singing and I’ve nearly had my teeth knocked out.”
