Call of Duty Black Ops 4 publisher Activision has hinted at Battle Royale gameplay support to rival PUBG and Fortnite.
Black Ops 4, which was announced last week, has been given an October 12 release date on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
And ahead of its full reveal on May 17, Activision has told investors that it is “keenly aware” of the battle royale genre’s popularity.
Perhaps Activision is planning a battle royale mode for Call of Duty Black Ops 4.
The news was shared by WSJ reporter Sarah E Needleman on Twitter (via VG247).
“The investment firm says Activision is keenly aware of how other game publishers have recently benefited from releasing titles in the popular battle royale genre,” the post reads.
“Management reminded investors that the company is a faster follower.”
It’s possible the company will incorporate Battle Royale into one of its franchises, and Call of Duty seems the most obvious fit.
Destiny would also make sense, especially given the open-ended nature of the in-game environments.
Call of Duty Black Ops 4 was announced alongside a teaser trailer last week.
The teaser showcased the series so far, featuring clips from the various campaigns and zombies spinoffs.
Recent rumours have suggested that the game will tone down the futuristic elements that appeared in more recent releases.
Developed by Treyarch, the shooter is said to represent a “game-changing experience”.
Little else is known about the title.
Other rumours have hinted at a Nintendo Switch port, which would certainly make sense given the console’s popularity.
The Nintendo Switch has already outsold the Wii U, despite only launching last March.
The handheld/home console hybrid has also outperformed the PS4 during a similar time period.
The console is said to have sold more than 3 million in Japan during its debut year, compared to just over one million for the PS4 in its first 12 months on sale.
