Rare coins sell on eBay for many times their net worth, thanks to their value to collectors.
A rare 2018 5p coin was listed by user akhatreej, and sold for a winning bid of £77 – plus £2.90 for postage.
There were 19 bids for the rare 50p coin, which has the name of the scientist Sir Isaac Newton inscribed on it.
So why is this coin so sought after by collectors?
The Royal Mint released a Sir Isaac Newton version of the silver 50p coin last year.
However, it confirmed 2018 versions of this coin were only available in one place.
This place is the Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant, Wales.
The user flagged up the coin’s rarity and the unusual process behind getting it.
“Not entering into circulation so won’t find it in your change OR annual sets it was struck today this is genuine and in hand.”
It costs £5 to strike your own coin at the Royal Mint Experience, according to the website.
There is also a £13 entry fee to visit the attraction, meaning it costs at least £18 to acquire this coin.
Recently, a rare £2 coin was found to be listed £7000 on eBay thanks to an unusual minting error.
The Mary Rose version of the £2 coin was produced back in 2011.
It has a rare minting error which makes it more rare than others of its kind.
eBay user charlotte6923 listed the coin on a Buy it now basis for the four figure sum.
The seller wrote: “High Scarcity Index, very rare ‘The Mary Rose’ £2 Coin. UK 2011.
“Minting error: Edge inscription upside down. Can’t be read when Queens head is facing up.”
