5 things I can't live without: Michael Vaughan

1 Instagram

People can be very negative about social media but to be honest, it has always been something I’ve enjoyed. I particularly like Instagram as it is so funny and light-hearted.

I think that Twitter can get a bit serious and Facebook never feels authentic to me but as Instagram is so visual, I think it can be more honest.

I love posting pictures and videos on there as it gives people the chance to see the real me.

2 Football

When I was eight, I went to see my side, Sheffield Wednesday, play for the first time. I didn’t just fall in love with the team, I became obsessed with the beautiful game.

When I was growing up it was my dream to become a professional footballer but sadly, I simply wasn’t good enough. Of course I am passionate about cricket too but if I had the choice, I would much rather watch a game of football.

What I love about football is the passion that it provokes, especially during the World Cup. People go a little bit bonkers and I love that. There’s nothing quite like the buzz and excitement of a live match.

3 Breakfast

I have never been the sort of person who struggles to get up in the morning. Instead I am always ready to get going. However, I do like a leisurely start to the day, so a relaxed breakfast is really important to me.

I usually make myself something nutritious such as an omelette or a poached egg with mashed avocado and toast. I love breakfast but I’ve never really got my head around brunch. To me it just seems like a posh way of missing a meal.

4 Love Island

When I get home in the evening I need to unwind, so I don’t want to be confronted by all the big issues of the day. Instead I crave an easy watch, which is why I enjoy the ITV2 reality show Love Island so much.

My children got me into it but now I think I’m just as addicted to the show as they are. Watching young, beautiful and not always particularly sensible young people trying to couple up is strangely entertaining and sometimes very funny.

It is definitely my guilty pleasure at the end of the day. I’d love it if the producers decided to bring out a series starring people over 50. Now that really would be compulsive viewing.

5 Red wine

I have heard that a glass of red wine a day is good for you so I always pour myself one when I get home after work. I’m no expert but I do like good quality stuff and lately I’ve got really into Lebanese wine, which is actually quite exquisite.

At this time of year, I also enjoy a really cold beer or a gin and tonic with ice. But I do have to draw the line at cider as I really can’t stand the stuff. To me it tastes like alcoholic squash.
