We Test the Prehistoric 2017 Ram HD in Depth before It Becomes a Fossil

As any Tyrannosaurus rex will tell you, being huge, intimidating, and immensely powerful is no guarantee of survival. The same is true for the Jurassic-class of heavy-duty pickups: the Ram HD remains highly capable, but it’s starting to approach prehistoric status. The Ram 3500 can tow up to 31,210 pounds via an available Cummins diesel that makes 900 lb-ft of torque. Its Ram 2500 HD “little” brother has the segment’s only rear coil-spring suspension; a rear air suspension is optional. But exclusive equipment and macho tow figures aren’t enough to offset an aging design, outmatched powertrains, and virtually no driver-assist technologies.
