Star Wars Episode 9: What we know so far about the Knights of Ren ahead of Episode 9

Star Wars Episode 9 has yet to be given a title, let alone a plot description. The final chapter in the Skywalker Saga will, however, undoubtedly be dramatic. Episode 9 is built on four decades of storytelling and will ultimately seek to balance the force, or so fans hope.

What do we know about the Knights of Ren?

The Knights of Ren were first introduced in 2017’s The Force Awakens.

Episode seven was the first of the contemporary trilogy and brought a new generation of fans into the Star Wars fold.

In this movie, they were described as a special order of soldiers who fought for Supreme Leader Snoke.

Kylo Ren (aka Ben Solo, played by Adam Driver) was their leader, and though they served the First Order they were not aligned to the Order.

Both Kylo and Snoke used the Knights of Ren as a tool of the dark side of the Force, operating insidiously within the First Order.

In The Last Jedi, however, the Knights were notoriously absent, only appearing in a flashback.

Rian Johnson explained why they were missing in an interview with iO9.

He said: “I guess I could’ve used them in place of the Praetorian guards but then it would feel like wasting them because all those guards had to die.

“And if Kylo had some kind of connection to them it would’ve added a complication that wouldn’t have helped the scene.

“Truth is, I just didn’t see a place for them in the movie.”

Now, according to Making Star Wars, they will feature prominently in Episode 9.

Making Star Wars, who have been known to report accurate scoops, also said the Knights of Ren were in a place called “The Beyond” during the previous movies.

Speculation is that The Beyond is located somewhere in the Unknown Regions.

These are an uncharted part of the galaxy where the Empire retreated to rebuild itself as the First Order.

Making Star Wars further speculates Making the Knights of Ren may turn on Kylo, forcing him to fight alongside Rey to defeat them.

This is all pure speculation, and fans are waiting with bated breath for the Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, on April 11 – 15.

The Star Wars universe is, like our own, constantly expanding.

In September 2015, Disney CEO Bob Iger said: “We have movies in development for Star Wars until 2020, and we started talking about what we’re going to do in 2021 and beyond.”

But right now fans are focussed on the still-untitled Episode 9.

Star Wars Episode 9 is out in UK cinemas on December 19, 2019.
