MAPPED: UK's most dangerous places to drive revealed – do YOU live in an accident hotspot?

GETTY

The most dangerous areas for car collisions in the UK have been revealed

The most dangerous roads in the UK have been revealed, based on the number of collisions in given police force areas.

The accident hot spots were revealed by data from the Government’s annual road safety report.

According to Witter Towbar Systems, which analysed the data and mapped it out across the UK, West Midlands is the most dangerous in the UK.

The area has the highest number of road casualties in the country, some 37,153 between 2011 – 2015.

Thames Valley and West Yorkshire are second and third respectively, with 36,778 and 36,597 road casualties recorded in the same time-frame.

The Department for Transport has reported a six per cent increase in the amount of incidents in the year ending September 2016.

There were a total of 182,560 casualties of all severities in the year ending September 2016, down by four per cent from the previous year.

The South of the UK accounted for the vast majority of accidents in the UK, while West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester and Lancashire were the riskiest places to drive in the North of England.

Dumfires & Galloway, in Scotland, was revealed as the safest area to drive in the UK, with the fewest casualties.

West Midlands was the police force area with the highest road casualties

More surprisingly – the City of London ranked as the second safest area to drive.

Scotland is the safest area of the country to drive in claiming nine out of the top 10 spots for areas with the least amount of casualties.

Despite London being the city with the second fewest number of casualties, the probability of an accident was the highest with one in four drivers being involved in an collision.

The 30mph speed limit zone is where the most accidents took place

This is compared to Kent which had the fourth highest amount of casualties at 33,591 but the probability of an accident is only one in 52.

The data not only recorded the number of road casualties and accidents, but also revealed the most common vehicles in these accidents.

According to the research, Volvo is the most common (0.68 per cent), Suzuki (0.62 per cent) and Honda (0.60 per cent).

Thursday and Saturday were the days where the most accidents took place

Areas under the 30mph speed limit were responsible for some  57 per cent of accidents in the UK.

Whereas just seven per cent were accounted for within the 70mph motorway speed limit.

Frequency of accidents in a 60mph speed limit zone are the second highest in the UK, accounting for over a quarter (26 per cent) of all accidents.

This is not particularly surprising, after all,  there are more 30mph speed limit zones in the UK than any other.

These car brands were involved in the most collisions

The level of risk in 30mph zones is also increased due to a number of hazards; pedestrians, traffic lights, and roundabouts.

Of all the accidents, men accounted for 65 per cent of them and drivers between the ages of 16-25 were responsible for 155,479 alone.

UK drivers over the age of 75 were accountable for the least amount of accidents.

Of the road casualties recorded in this study, only 780 (0.78 per cent) of 100,000 collisions were fatal.
