Geordie Shore star stuns in MMA fight

Chalmers’ MMA career started in perfect fashion.

REALITY TV star Aaron Chalmers was victorious on his MMA debut as he won via a first round submission at BAMMA 29 on Saturday (AEST).

The 29-year-old, who starred on MTV programs Geordie Shore and Ex on the Beach, defeated his welterweight opponent Greg Jenkins after just 2:09 minutes.

It was a hugely impressive performance from Chalmers, who looked calm and composed as he proved to be too strong for the Liverpudlian.

He seemed a natural inside the cage as he showed classy punch combinations as well as proving superior when he took the fight to the floor.

Chalmers finished the contest with a Kimura armlock which forced the submission, showing he means real business in the sport, and him fighting is not just a PR stunt.

Many doubted whether Chalmers was the real deal, but he was determined from the outset to put in a good showing in the cage.

“A fight’s a fight. Once that cage door shuts it’s only me and Greg in there,” Chalmers said before the fight. “When we’re in there we’ll see who comes out on top.

“I’ve been training for this for years and I’ve just done an eight-week fight camp in Birmingham at UTC.

“I’m confident. If I didn’t think I was going to win I wouldn’t go in there.

“He wants to kill me and I want to kill him, it’s as simple as that.”

The fight took place despite some controversy at the weigh-ins. The bout was originally slated as a lightweight fight to take place at 155 pounds, but Chalmers tipped the scales at 170 pounds. Jenkins weighed in at 163 pounds, but BAMMA didn’t say whether either fighter would lose a percentage of their fight purse.

On the other hand, Mick Stanton and Pelu Adetola both missed weight and were fined a percentage of their purse.

Fighter Norman Parke took to Twitter, outraged neither Chalmers nor Jenkins were penalised. Parke was fined 50 per cent of his purse for missing weight by just 0.8 pounds ahead of his BAMMA 28 title fight against Paul Redmond earlier this year.

“So Bamma fined me 50 per cent for missing (weight) when most if it was their fault and this guy here (Chalmers) gets nothing … f*** that!” he wrote.

Jenkins later revealed he had been notified ahead of the weigh-ins Chalmers would be unable to make weight, saying on Facebook the fight would be moved from a lightweight to a welterweight clash.

There was plenty of surprise and goodwill sent Chalmers’ way after his win.
