Fastbrick: Ford and Lego Snap Together a 1968 Mustang Fastback Kit for the Seven-Year-Old in Everyone

LEGO Speed Champions 1968 Ford Mustang fastback

There are many ways to honor an icon, but none may be bigger than to be re-created in Lego form. At least that’s what the seven-year-old in us has declared. A little short of two years after Ford and Lego displayed a one-third-scale model of the Le Mans GT, the two have teamed up again to build a brick-bodied race car. This time, the 1968 Mustang fastback coupe joins the ranks of Lego’s Speed Champions.

The fastback is the next Ford star in a growing roster of Lego Speed Champions model cars, a lineup that also includes Lego versions of cars from Bugatti, Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes-Benz. In the past, Lego has released kits of the 1966 GT40 and 2016 GT, the F-150 Raptor, a Fiesta WRC rally car, a Ford Model A hot rod, and even a 2015 Mustang GT. Unlike the Lego Technic kits, which typically include thousands of pieces and cost hundreds of dollars, the Speed Champions sets are much more accessible and much simpler. With 183 pieces tumbling about inside each box, the Mustang is geared for seven-to-14-year-old builders and would be perfect eye candy for a windowsill, desk, or nightstand.

The body is built out of green blocks, presumably a nod to the Highland Green paint that was popular on ’68 Mustangs, including, of course, the one Steve McQueen drove in the movie Bullitt 50 years ago. The contrasting roof is built with black bricks, while the wheels come in gold. The textured taillights and protruding dual exhaust tips are fantastic details, but unfortunately, Lego wasn’t able to find a way to incorporate the signature quarter-window louvers. Racing stripes, numbers, Ford logos, and sponsor decals can adorn the body, depending on your taste, for the total race-car look.

The kit also comes with a miniature timing board, displaying information to a helmeted driver in a racing suit behind the wheel. The Speed Champions 1968 Mustang is priced at $ 14.99 plus tax and will be available in stores and online starting March 1. Check back for additional Speed Champions coming for 2018.
