THE condition of former MotoGP champion Nicky Hayden remains extremely critical after his accident, a statement from the Bufalini hospital of Cesena said on Friday.
The 35-year-old motorcycle racer remains in intensive care for the second night in a row, with his family by his side.
The hospital statement said his condition is still “extremely critical” due to the multiple traumas he sustained. Doctors stated the previous day that Hayden had suffered serious brain damage in the crash.
A car crashed into Hayden’s bicycle on Wednesday while he was riding with some friends in the northern Italian city of Rimini.
After the accident, Hayden was treated on-site by medical staff and taken by ambulance to a hospital near Rimini for immediate treatment. The 2006 MotoGP champion was then transferred to Cesena, where he remains in the intensive care unit.
Hayden’s Honda WSBK team has released a statement saying: “Nicky Hayden’s clinical condition remains extremely critical.
“The young man, who is still in the intensive care unit of Cesena’s Bufalini Hospital, has suffered a serious polytrauma with subsequent serious cerebral damage.
“The prognosis remains reserved.”
Motorsports identities have led an outpouring of well wishes and tributes to the popular Hayden since the grievous accident.
