Wales, despite previous objections to the Friday night games, will face Ireland at the Millennium Stadium tonight (8.05pm) in the 2016 Six Nations‘ only non-weekend clash.
But England, who played in Cardiff on the opening weekend of the 2015 Six Nations on a Friday, are staunchly against such events happening in London.
“We are not in discussions with the Six Nations about hosting Friday night matches at Twickenham,” RFU chief executive Ian Ritchie said.
“Our position hasn’t changed.
“We don’t generally support Friday night games at Twickenham for a variety of reasons, not least the challenge for the fans of getting to and from the match.”
England’s 21-16 win over Wales in 2015 attracted nearly nine million TV viewers.
And John Feehan, Six Nations Ltd chief executive, believes the lucrative nature of the evening games is too good to walk away from.
“It has worked well and I think the Wales v Ireland game will be fantastic and I think we will get great [television] numbers for it as well,” Feehan said.
“Ratings-wise, it is certainly as good as a Saturday.
“It is spreading the load across the weekend.
“The French tend to like [Friday games], the Welsh put up with it and the rest don’t want it at the moment — but that could change in time.
“You keep pushing the door and eventually the door will open. Would I like more Fridays? Yes.
“Will I get them? Probably, in time, but it will take time.”
