Britons travel to THIS many countries in their life – the number will surprise you

British holidaymakers may be planning their trip next trip for 2018 already, as a number of airlines offer bargain prices.

Long haul flights are dropping in price, with flights to New York just £99 as more people head further afield for a trip.

Yet a recent survey by London City Airport has found the number of countries the average Briton has visited.

The number is a surprising one – how do you fare?

The YouGov survey found that Britons visit an average of 9.58 countries in their lifetime.

This has increased since 37 per cent in 2013 when the number was just seven countries.

Whilst many are choosing a staycation holiday in 2018, citing cheaper costs and easier travel, a staggering 94 per cent have been abroad at least once in their lifetime.

Research conducted by online travel agent Travel Republic found that more than nine in ten (93 per cent) British repeated a holiday, with an average of ten times to the same destination.

Unsurprisingly, the top ten countries most visited by Britons are all within Europe.

France comes out on top with 76 per cent having visited it by Britons, closely followed by Spain at 67 per cent.

Italy, the US and Germany took joint third with 47 per cent.

Robert Sinclair, CEO of London City Airport, commented: “UK travel habits continue to evolve with more trips being made by Brits seeking out new experiences.

“The rise of social media is partly responsible for that, with greater exposure to the possibilities abroad, and also the ease and relative affordability of short breaks.”

In the current climate, Britons should always check the latest government travel advice and advice for the country they are planning on visiting.

Destinations such as Tunisia have recently been deemed safe again for travel for Britons following the 2015 Sousse terrorist attack which killed 30 British tourists.

Other popular holiday hot-spots for Britons outside of Europe include Egypt and Turkey.

Whilst the risk of terror attacks remain in nearly all countries, they are both deemed safe for travel.
