BBC News: Sally Nugent stunned by Dan Walker’s awkward knowledge challenge live on air

The 47-year-old television reporter was sharing a story with football fans when her knowledge of the topic was called into question by her BBC Breakfast co-host Dan Walker.

Discussing the latest news, Sally seemed thrown when Dan, 41, queried whether her assumption of a world first in football was correct.

Sally began: “Now being president of your country does bring with it certain privileges. Former world footballer of the year and the current president of Liberia George Ware – well, he didn’t let this one go by, the ripe old age of 51.

“[He is] the former AC Milan striker and the first African footballer to win the Ballon d’Or [French magazine award for European footballer of the year].

Showing a tweet from the player and his subsequent performance in last night’s Liberia v Nigeria match, Sally commentated: “There he is, he gets the ball, bit of the old skill, bit of the old magic, he was leading out Liberia against Nigeria last night.

“Ware played 79 minutes, Nigeria won 2-1 and here’s another interesting little fact, his son Timothy, 18, was actually playing for the USA last night.

“So I wonder if that’s the first time that a father and son have played in international matches on the same night,” she declared in satisfaction.

“It’s got to be,” Naga Munchetty agreed helpfully. “It’s got to be hasn’t it, with the age,” as Sally smiled: “Yeah I think it has.

“By process of elimination, yes.”

Dan continued to remain silent at first, as Naga then shared: “Yeah because he was 23 when his son was born. He’s 18 now so…”

“The Gudjohnsens, from Iceland,” Dan suddenly said with a grin on his face.

Seemingly caught off-guard, Sally tried to reply but Dan got in there first.

“Alright I might have thrown it out there incorrectly,” he said, as Sally simply said “yes”.

But despite the need to move on, Dan couldn’t resist going further and guessed: “I think Eidur Gudjohnsen’s dad. You have to check that one out. Not for a different country though, same country.”

“Yeah… ok,” Sally simply replied. “Ok I’ll check that one.”

Seemingly regretting his admission, Dan said he might have made a “fool” out of himself, but his co-host Naga, 43, tried to reassure him.

“Not at all,” she said, quickly moving on from the awkward moment. “It’s good to debate these things.”

Eidur’s, 39, father is the former Icelandic footballer Arnor Gudjohnsen, who was also a striker and the top scorer in the 1986-87 season.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
