2019 Volvo S60: Here Are Our First Glimpses of the Redesigned Sedan

volvo-s60-2019

Volvo has just revealed its all-new 2019 V60 wagon, so we knew a new S60 sedan wasn’t too far behind. And indeed, we’ve now gotten two glimpses at the new mid-size sedan courtesy of Volvo’s CEO Håkan Samuelsson, who shared a photo of the camouflaged car on twitter, and Swedish publication Teknikens Värld, which snagged a completely undisguised photo of the S60 ahead of its debut later this year.

The S60’s look is hardly a shocker, as it appears to share everything forward of the B-pillar with its wagon stablemate. That’s a good thing as far as we’re concerned, because Volvo’s sleek new styling, with details such as the Thor’s Hammer LED headlight signature visible on the camouflaged prototype, has done a lot to raise the brand’s profile as a design leader. At the rear we can see that the S60 sports C-shaped taillights similar to the larger S90 sedan, but with the license plate positioned between the taillights rather than on the rear bumper as on the S90.

This example appears to have some sporty styling touches, such as black wheels and a rear lip spoiler, suggesting it’s equipped with the R-Design package. We expect that Volvo will offer the S60 in its typical Momentum, Inscription, and R-Design trim levels, and that it will borrow its 250-hp T5 and 316-hp T6 boosted 2.0-liter inline-four engines from the V60. A plug-in hybrid seems a sure bet as well, with the same four-cylinder paired with electric motors in both T6 and T8 forms.

Volvo will build the new S60 at a new factory in South Carolina. That’s also where the model will be officially unveiled in the coming months.
