2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet gets 4Matic, 25th Anniversary edition

Mercedes-Benz is rounding out the E-Class portfolio a cabriolet variant for 2018. It has everything we’d expect: Mercedes’ latest safety and luxury features wrapped in styling topped with a fabric roof borrowed from the S-Class. Slightly unexpected: Mercedes is offering up a 4Matic model.

That’s right. If you want to buy a convertible and drive it in questionable weather, Mercedes has an E-Class for you. It’s the first time Mercedes has offered the E-Class cab with 4Matic all-wheel drive. The 2018 E400 Cabriolet will be revealed next week at the Geneva Motor Show and goes on sale in late 2017 in the United States. Pricing was not announced.

The 4Matic system works with Mercedes’ familiar 3.0-liter V6 biturbo rated at 329 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain is completed with a nine-speed automatic transmission, capable of propelling the droptop to a top speed of 130 miles per hour.

The new E-Class cab is five inches longer, 2.9 inches wider, and 1.4 inches taller than the previous model, which Mercedes says will improve space for backseat passengers. The four-seater features seven trim options, LED interior lights, leather, and a rear backup camera as standard equipment, and the popular Airscarf feature is an option. The fabric roof can open or close in 20 seconds at up to 30 mph and comes in four colors.

The 2018 E-Class Cab looks the part. Rather it looks exactly as we’d expect, featuring similar body styling to its coupe and sedan siblings, and garnishes like LED lights, a prominent grille with the Mercedes star, and a long hood with power domes. The 18-inch wheels are standard, and AMG 18s and 19s are options. Pre-Safe systems and active braking are standard.

For recent history buffs, Mercedes is marking 25 years of E-Class cabs with an anniversary model that includes special badges, 19-inch wheels, Designo interior trim and a red-on-red exterior color scheme. It’s meant to recall the C300 CE-24 Cabriolet that launched in spring 1992.
