Zara Tindall Olympic bid: Could it be royal GOLD for Team GB at Tokyo in 2020?

The young royal, who works closely with equestrian line Musto, previously represented Great Britain at the Olympics, taking home a Silver medal.

And it seems Zara, 36, would love another crack at some silverware, telling Express.co.uk she hopes to go to the biggest sporting event in the world when it goes to Japan in 2020.

Speaking about the future of her career, she said: “I’ve got some nice young horses so hopefully I’ll still be riding them at top level, and Tokyo is three and a half years away now, so to be able to carry on riding at top level would be great.”

Zara qualified for the Rio Olympics last year but wasn’t selected for the final team, so her place is in no way guaranteed. But with her focus and determination it would be no surprise to see her flying the flag for Britain once more.

Her weekend at Burghley Horse Trials reflected how tough the sport can be, with Zara hitting headlines around the world for falling off her horse on the notoriously tricky course.

The mum-of-one revealed who inspired her interest in the sport, name-checking her parents.

Her mother, Princess Anne, is also an Olympian, riding the Queen‘s horse Goodwill in the Montreal 1976 games – so it is no surprise that her daughter went on to follow in her footsteps.

But Zara explained there was no pressure for her to take up equestrianism, and said: “It was our decision what we were going to do I guess.

“They never pushed us to do it, but if we wanted to do it we had to do it properly.”

Moving away from competing, there have been questions over whether Zara would take over the Royal Studs in the future, but she has declined to confirm on specific plans, and admitted training was something she had tried in the past but moved away from.

She said: ” I used to train point to point-ers and I really enjoyed that but it was hard doing both things (training and competing) at the same time. I think I enjoy pre-training and starting them off before they go to training, I really like doing that.

“So I don’t know, I’ll probably have to think about it more when the time comes.”

Zara spoke about her career and future plans to Express.co.uk after opening up about her marriage to Mike Tindall and motherhood.

Zara does also manage to pursue her passion for equestrianism in another way – through fashion.

She has designed a collection for riders with the brand for several years, something she plans to continue with for a long time to come.

Explaining what inspired her to chose this brand to work with, she said: “I grew up with Musto so I was very lucky and it was nice to be able to try figure out how many more things you can do with the fabrics and coats, and make them more technical I guess.

“My favourite piece from the collection is the Arena BRT, which is a really good jacket for this time of year when it’s still quite warm.”

Zara was speaking on behalf of Musto at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, where Musto launched its new Cross Country Equine Simulator, giving spectators the experience to jump fences from the 2016 cross country course.
