Perhaps it was the influence of sultry silent film stars like Louise Brooks and Clara Bow, but those born in the 1930s had sex the most often.
Millennials and iGen (those born in the 1990s) are having the least sex of all generations throughout history.
The study, called “Declines in Sexual Frequency among American Adults, 1989–2014”, found people are having sex less in general.
While dating apps have been viewed as promoting no-strings attached sex, authors of study claim they are actually causing young people to have less sex.
“It ends up putting a lot of importance on physical appearance, and that, I think, is leaving out a large section of the population,” researcher Jean Twenge, author of the study, told the Washington Post.
He claimed this is because of the standard of physical beauty the youth expect from their partners.
This standard is maintained by apps where you “swipe” people based on images of them.
He said: “For a lot of folks who are of average appearance, marriage and stable relationships was where they were having sex … [and dating apps may be] leaving some people with fewer choices and they might be more reluctant to search for partners at all.”
This means millennials are having sex less than their parents did when they were their age.
The study also found that people living together between 2010 and 2014 have sex 16 fewer times per year, compared to between 2000 and 2004.
That amounts to one less time each month.
American’s in their 20s have sex an average of 80 times a year.
